Job Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Director oversees all operations of the medical laboratory to ensure high-quality, accurate, and timely diagnostic services. This leadership role is responsible for strategic planning, compliance with regulatory requirements, staff management, and the integration of advanced technology to improve laboratory services. The role requires collaboration with healthcare providers, administrators, and quality assurance teams to support patient care and clinical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Management:
• Plan, direct, and coordinate daily operations of the laboratory to ensure efficiency and quality.
• Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) in compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, ISO).
• Monitor laboratory performance metrics, quality control measures, and productivity.
Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:
• Ensure laboratory compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
• Lead quality assurance and quality control programs to maintain high standards in diagnostic testing.
• Oversee the preparation for and success in accreditation inspections.
Staff Leadership and Development:
• Recruit, train, and mentor laboratory staff, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment.
• Conduct performance evaluations and manage staff development plans.
• Address staffing needs and ensure adequate coverage for all shifts.
Financial Oversight:
• Develop and manage the laboratory budget, including equipment procurement, supply chain management, and cost control initiatives.
• Evaluate and approve capital investments in new technologies and infrastructure.
• Ensure laboratory profitability by monitoring revenue streams and controlling expenses.
Collaboration and Communication:
• Collaborate with healthcare providers and administrative teams to align laboratory services with organizational goals.
• Communicate laboratory findings and insights to stakeholders effectively.
• Serve as the primary liaison with external vendors, contractors, and accrediting bodies.
Technology and Innovation:
• Stay informed about advancements in laboratory technology and methodologies.
• Implement new diagnostic tools and systems to enhance service capabilities.
• Oversee the integration of electronic medical records (EMR) and laboratory information systems (LIS).
Qualifications:
Education:
• Doctorate in Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Pathology, or a related field (PhD, MD, or DO preferred).
• Board certification in Clinical Pathology or Laboratory Medicine (e.g., ABP, ABMLI) is highly desirable.
Experience:
• Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting, with at least 5 years in a managerial or director role.
• Demonstrated expertise in laboratory operations, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
Skills and Competencies:
• Strong leadership and organizational skills.
• In-depth knowledge of laboratory technologies, methodologies, and workflows.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS) and data management tools.
